Breaking through Barriers with Youth from Reach Academy!

On Tuesday, I was fortunate enough to work with REACH Academy students through the Grossmont Union High School District. Our motivational session was on Breaking through Barriers, my signature workshop that teaches the power of goal-setting and how to break through mental and physical barriers that often stand in our way and keep us from attaining our goals in life.
The first part of the session is on goal-setting, the power of setting goals. It has been said that if you don't know where you are going than any road will take you there. The power in setting goals is the ability to stay true north and not deviate from the path that will lead you to following your dreams. For must people they never experience what it is like to see their dreams come true, but, I would like for you to imagine your dreams coming true because you followed through on attaining your goals. When we can learn to discipline ourselves and stay true to our core convictions amazing things can happen. I love seeing the dreams of overs come true! I love celebrating the successes of others because then others will also celebrate with me in my successes. Encourage everyone you come in contact with to live their dreams...not the lives others want them to lead!
The second part of the session dealt with identifying the barriers that keep us away from achieving our goals and dreams. You are not what others say you are...you are not what they called you...many times our fears from the barriers placed by others stop us from attaining our goals. For example, one goal I had when I was in high school was to graduate from college. I would have been the first in my family but my guidance counselor discouraged me and told me that I was not college material. When your guidance counselor tells you you are not college material it is hard to break through the barrier that you are. Along the way many people, people very close to me doubted my ability to make something out of my life and one of the keys to breaking through barriers is surrounding yourself with people who believe in you. People who lift you up and don't bring you down....people who fill your cup and don't empty it.
The third and final part of the session was the process of teaching the youth how to physically break through a one inch thick 12" by 12" pine wood board. The object is to write down their goals on an index card, then write down all the barriers that have held them back on the board. The board is placed on cement blocks and under the board is the index card of goals that each person wants to achieve but in order to pick up the card each person need to physically break through their board of barriers! The feeling is out of this world to see what society considers the "most unlikely" break through their fears and achieve their goals. It is possible if you want it bad enough! The question remains how bad do you want it? I would like to help you get there!
